Hurricanes Slump To Friendly Defeat 9th March, 2014
Hurricanes Slump To Friendly Defeat

After last week's unfortunate showing, where the Hurricanes started the game with 9 men but managed to keep the scoreline to a respectable 0-3, it was encouraging that they were able to start with the maximum of 11 men this week.

Despite trailing new boys Trafford Mersey Reserves 2-0 at half-time, with the first goal an extremely unlucky deflection via Robert Wilcock (who does have previous when it comes to scoring in the wrong net, I might add), it's fair to say the Hurricanes dominated towards the end of the half.

The mood was lifted when Adam Strand, in his new outfield role, set up Sully to curl the ball beautifully in to the top-right corner of the net. The jubilation was short lived though as the opposition were able to fumble the ball across the line for a third following a corner.

They then added a fourth when Adam Strand cancelled out his earlier contribution with an inexplicable barge to the back of a Trafford Mersey Reserves forward resulting in a penalty which was subsequently converted.

Despite the scoreline, which was definitely overly flattering, it was a decent performance with a lot of positives and some good, solid debuts by new recruits Adnan, Romin, and Pete.

Hurricanes Tipped For Failure 25th February, 2014
Hurricanes Tipped For Failure

With less than half the league season left to play it's about time we brought our current poll to a close. The fans have spoken and have tipped us to finish bottom of the league; a position we have held since early November. The result comes as little suprise with the Hurricanes currently enduring possibly their worst run of results since their inception. With a new influx of players, however, there's life in the old dog yet. The results were as follows:

  1. Probably bottom: 14 Votes (52%)
  2. Mid-table: 9 Votes (33%)
  3. Top, obviously: 4 Votes (15%)

Week 10 and 11 Results

Evening, sports fans. First of all, my apologies for the lack of posting last week. My enthusiasm for writing these reports is dwindling somewhat due to the fact we're currently getting twatted every game. And the two most recent outings have been no different; losing consecutive games to Greenpark United.

The first game started off promisingly with the Hurricanes going 1-0 up when Daniel Cooney pounced on a loose ball following a defensive mix-up. A defensive masterclass kept the score at 1-0 until shortly before half-time when Greenpark finally managed to break down the resolute Hurricanes backline to equalise.

The patented Hurricanes meltdown then once again occurred and they quickly found themselves 6-1 down. They were, however, able to restore some dignity thanks to a superb individual effort by Chris Dickinson and a penalty earned and converted by new player, Tim.

The second game was basically over before it even began. Not even managing to get a starting eleven together, ten brave and foolhardy Hurricanes loyalists took to the field despite insurmountable odds. Urban Dictionary defines the word "mullered" as "broken, smashed or beaten up to the point of being visibly altered, unusable or non-functional." and I think that sums the game up pretty well.

Managing to keep the scoreline to a semi-respectable 0-5 by half-time, things went from hopeless to impossible when Tim limped off part-way through the second half with an injury. But with the game in its dying minutes the Hurricanes summoned what remained of their spirit and managed one last counter-attack with Daniel Cooney, Adam Jenkins and Chris Dickinson combining brilliantly to deny Greenpark United a clean sheet.

The full results for week 10 were as follows:

  • Greenpark United 6 - 3 GM Hurricanes
  • Firbank 4 - 0 Chorlton Athletic
  • Real Victoria 3 - 1 Mancunian Wave
  • St. Johns Reserves 3 - 4 Cheadle Hulme Albion
  • Wythenshawe County 4 - 3 Joshua Brooks Reserves

The full results were week 11 were as follows:

This Sunday the Hurricanes face Wythenshawe County; a team they were beaten 2-0 by earlier in the season in a game which, sadly, was one of the Hurricanes better performances this season.

Week 9 Results

Another week, another defeat, but focusing on the positives it wasn't as heavy a defeat as the Hurricanes have suffered in recent weeks, losing 2-0 to new boys Wythenshawe County.

The game was delicately balanced until mid-way through the first half when Wythenshawe County managed to fumble the ball over the line following a corner. Some would argue that their second goal shouldn't have stood due to a heinous shove on player/manager, Chris Dickinson. It did stand, however, and the Hurricanes went in to the break 2-0 down.

The second half was largely bereft of chances for both teams. The only noteworthy chance came as the game was drawing to a conclusion; an expertly taken corner by winger Ashley McDonald was forced over the line only for the referee to call a foul on the keeper and disallow it.

The full results for week 9 were as follows:

  • GM Hurricanes 0 - 2 Wythenshawe County
  • Davyhulme Park Reserves 4 - 1 Cheadle Hulme Albion
  • Chorlton Athletic 1 - 0 Greenpark United
  • Joshua Brooks Reserves 2 - 3 Real Victoria
  • Mancunian Wave 2 - 5 Firbank

This Sunday sees the Hurricanes battle Greenpark United in what promises to be a gritty, bottom of the table clash.

Next up for the Hurricanes is the visit of Wythenshawe County in a game that is being described as "on this Sunday".

Week 7 Results

Fatigue was the downfall of the Hurricanes this week as their goal difference took another hit with a 5-1 loss to Firbank.

The game started evenly with Firbank arguably creating the better chances. The opposition struck first with an effort that goalkeeper Adam Strand could do nothing about. It fell to that Hurricanes stalwart Daniel Cooney to draw them level with a mesmerising dribble through the heart of the Firbank defence followed by a superb finish.

The second half began much the same as the first one did with both sides creating and squandering chances. Chris Dickinson came the closest to scoring when he hit the crossbar with a sublime header from an Ashley McDonald corner. Unfortunately Firbank then ran up the other end of the pitch and scored themselves.

With no substitutes to fall back on, the tired legs of the mighty Hurricanes eleven struggled to keep pace with the opposition and they conceded another three goals towards the end of the match.

That result leaves the Hurricanes languishing at the bottom of the table, but as the great philosopher Yazz once said "the only way is up".

The full results for week 7 were as follows:

  • GM Hurricanes 1 - 5 Firbank
  • Cheadle Hulme Albion 3 - 2 Real Victoria
  • Joshua Brooks Reserves 1 - 6 Davyhulme Park Reserves
  • Mancunian Wave 4 - 1 Chorlton Athletic
  • St. Johns Reserves 1 - 1 Wythenshawe County

Week 8 pits the Hurricanes against Real Victoria; a team they faced in a pre-season friendly... and lost to.

Week 6 Results 28th October, 2013
Week 6 Results

Another bad week for the Hurricanes saw them ship four goals in the first half as they slumped to a 4-1 defeat away to Davyhulme Park Reserves.

The game began with an onslaught by the home team and the Hurricanes quickly found themselves trailing by two goals. It then settled in to a more even affair and the Hurricanes were unlucky not to claim a goal back when Daniel Cooney blasted over the net from close range with a shot reminiscent of Sully's howler from the previous week.

The Hurricanes did however claim a goal back when Daniel Cooney was maliciously brought down during one of his meandering charges towards the goalmouth. Chris Dickinson stepped up to take the resulting free kick with a shot which could only be described as 'unstoppable'. Rather than giving the Hurricanes a platform on which to build they capitulated once again and conceded another two goals right on the stroke of half time.

The second half saw a more spirited performance by the Hurricanes; they managed to prevent the scoreline becoming embarrassing and were arguably the better team.

The full results for week 6 were as follows:

Next up is the visit of Firbank, the only unbeaten team left in the league. A tough challenge to say the least. It is worth mentioning, however, that the Hurricanes are the only side to have beaten current league-toppers St. Johns Reserves so anything is possible.

Week 5 Results

The Hurricanes were the definition of heart this week as they twice came from behind to grab a well-earned point from Chorlton Athletic in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

After the trademark Hurricanes poor start - an unfortunate own goal by the usually reliable Asad Sarwar and a bullet-like header by an unmarked player from a corner - the game settled into an evenly balanced tie. The Hurricanes first goal came from a penalty after Adam Jenkins, with a Usain Bolt-like sprint into the area, was brought down by the opposing keeper. A penalty which Sohail Raza had no problem in slotting away.

After the break Sully, with a contender for miss of the season, spurned a chance mere inches from the net when it looked easier to score than to miss... but he missed. But then, a reinvigorated Daniel Cooney ended his goal drought with a superb curler into the top left corner of the net from the right wing to draw the Hurricanes level. A defensive mix-up abruptly ended the celebrations though as Chorlton Athletic again took the lead. With the Hurricanes heading for another defeat it was left to Daniel Cooney to again come to the rescue with another solo effort to take himself up to joint second, with Chris Dickinson, on the top scorer list.

The full results for week 5 were as follows:

  • GM Hurricanes 3 - 3 Chorlton Athletic
  • Cheadle Hulme Albion 2 - 4 Davyhulme Park Reserves
  • Greenpark United 3 - 6 Real Victoria
  • Joshua Brooks Reserves 3 - 3 Mancunian Wave
  • St. Johns Reserves 3 - 3 Firbank

The Hurricanes next fixture is an away game at the sewage-scented Broadway Field, home of Davyhulme Park Reserves.

Week 4 Results 16th October, 2013
Week 4 Results

Another disappointing result for the Hurricanes as they are made to pay for their early lapses in concentration in a 5-2 defeat to in-form Mancunian Wave.

The Hurricanes were unfortunate to concede an early penalty for a questionable push in the area by Ashley Murphy, which stand-in goalkeeper Lee Hall was mere inches off tipping round the post. Another three goals quickly followed due to a cluster of errors by the Hurricanes back-line. Another goal shortly after half-time gave the unpalatable score of 0-5.

The team then saw a resurgence with a goal by Chris Dickinson followed by a superbly taken penalty by Asad Sarwar. It was too little too late though as the Hurricanes slip to their second defeat in four league games.

The full results for week 4 were as follows:

  • Mancunian Wave 5 - 2 GM Hurricanes
  • Chorlton Athletic 6 - 0 Cheadle Hulme Albion
  • St. Johns Reserves 0 - 0 Davyhulme Park Reserves
  • Firbank 5 - 2 Greenpark United
  • Real Victoria 3 - 1 Wythenshawe County

Next up for the Hurricanes is the visit of Chorlton Athletic, currently sitting one point and two places above them in the league, in a fixture that manager Chris Dickinson believes is winnable. Players have been instructed to arrive earlier than normal in preparation for the game; it remains to be seen whether the manager will be leading by example.

Week 3 Results

GM Hurricanes hung on to claim a draw against Joshua Brooks Reserves but will feel disappointed not to have claimed all three points after going 2-0 up.

An own goal saw the Hurricanes get off the mark followed by a sublime finish by Sohail Raza. Joshua Brooks Reserves clawed a goal back just before half time thanks to a rare mistake by Chris Dickinson who sliced the ball into his own net from a corner kick.

Towards the end of the game, with the Hurricanes heading for victory, Joshua Brooks Reserves were gifted a penalty when Adam Jenkins allegedly brought down some fat bastard inside the Hurricanes penalty area. Despite Adam Strand managing to get a hand on the shot the ball trickled in to the net for the equaliser. The Hurricanes then delivered a masterclass in defending to prevent a disappointing result from turning into a farcical one.

The full results for week 3 were as follows:

That point moves the Hurricanes up a place to sixth with a tough game against league leaders Mancunian Wave up next.

Tom Jones Out For Rest Of Season 22nd October, 2012
Tom Jones Out For Rest Of Season

On the 14th of October, around 11:30am, at Turn Moss playing fields in Stretford, the prolific and enigmatic Welsh wunderkind, Tom Jones, was scythed down in a vicious and unprovoked challenge. As a result of this heinous display of unrelenting aggression Tom sustained season-threatening injuries to his knee. Thinking on his feet Tom Darlington rushed to his aid ferrying Mr. Jones to the car park in his van. After being loaded into the waiting ambulance, he was rushed to the hospital where the dilligent doctors were able to save Tom's knee and, with it, the hopes and dreams of the Hurricanes collective. Tom will hopefully live to play another day but unfortunately it appears his season is over.

It would appear the following teams have been ejected from the league:

  • AFC Urmston Meadowside
  • Urmston Hawks

This dramatically changes our position from 3rd out of 11 teams to 3rd out of 9 teams.

End of Season Outing 2011/2012 9th September, 2012
End of Season Outing 2011/2012

A couple of weeks back the GM Hurricanes had their end of season outing. A great time was had by all. During the festivities the following awards were... awarded:

Welcome to the official GM Hurricanes site 9th August, 2012
Welcome to the official GM Hurricanes site

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master,
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a GM Hurricanes player, my son!
